Wew lad, the world is busy. Can't believe its been two weeks. Anyways, I've been moving the wheels learning this new form of animation. Practiced a short animation, worked on some walk cycles and jumps for numerous characters. Things are looking pretty good. I'd like to work on another longer practice animation before beginning the daunting task of animating the pilot. Interesting note,

I had someone tell me this looks like cartoon network. Ha. Yeah, I miss the style. Like a neo-Hanna Barberra.

Anyways, enough blabber. We got some introductions. Here we have Shamos. He's a happy-go-lucky guy who lives an unfufilling job as a registered nurse. Shamos wants to get out of the rat race, make some money, and live life without any worries. Real hakuna matata. When everyone's lives turn to garbage, Shamos is thrown into glory. He's best friends with Solomon & Grundy and the trio go out to find riches and ladies.

Here we have Johana Lebowitz, aka "Mayhem." a neurotic and self-absorbed rebel who deep down wants to do good. Her rich background allows her to fund many of the harebrained schemes our protagonists go on. She has a crush on Solomon, which allows Grundy to take advantage of her. She doesn't make much of an appearance in the pilot, but if the show goes on, she would develop into an important and realized character.

And here we have... Solomon.

He's a rabbit. The end.

Hey, keptch'a waitin' huh?

January was rather busy work in reality and not enough on the virtual front. Life is ALL about balance. The closer things get into harmony, the better things are. Anyways, this entry will focus on Grundy, the deuteragonist of our cartoon.

Grundy Dile is a snarky, hot-headed Crocodile who is obsessed with women. Where there is a female in sight, Grundy has no fear! He approaches with his head up high, his eyebrow raised, and his chest puffed out, ready to spit some game. Grundy is the exact opposite of his buddy Solomon. While Solomon is quieter and more reserved, Grundy is loud and extroverted. They're like peanut butter and jelly, two completely different substances that attract one another. What binds the two together? Their entire lack of direction in life! Better to be going through life not knowing what the hell you are doing with someone else than alone, right?

At first, he was designed to be pretty big and burly, with machismo. But... The design was toned down a bit to look more slender and slick. The Hawaiian shirt is retained, though. What wasn't toned down was the guy's animalistic instinct to approach and talk to every girl he sees. When Grundy gets going, he doesn't stop. Truly a voracious appetite.

Not a lot of people develop an understanding of how a cartoon is made. Hell, I don't really know, either. Everyone on planet Earth has a different set of DNA, blood types, body types, and hair colors, so naturally, how they begin the creative process is different as well. And many people keep things to themselves, which is understandable. You have to analyze and experiment with how people do things, try them out for yourself, fail, rinse, repeat, etc. I felt chronicling my journey through a blog format would be beneficial to see the humble beginnings of work, so to speak, and I love to see the concept work and how things change as a show/work of art develops.

The protagonist of our cartoon was designed a bit complex at first, which I feel is a great way to start drawing a character. Make it stylistic and hard, and then break it down to a simplified style. Many cartoonists have a silhouette test, you take the shadow of the character, and if you can recognize it immediately, it's a good design.

Well, I can pick Alfae from that horrible piece of shit cartoon "The Problem Solverz" out in a lineup of cartoon characters, but that doesn't make Alfae a good design. Or you get the other response, "Durr, if a kid can draw it, it's a good design, Durr." Well, can a kid draw adult Goku? I mean, he can kind of draw it, but all the musculature and physiology of Goku are rather complex. Yet, Goku still remains one of the most popular cartoon characters of all time, so honestly, that's one of the first lessons you learn when making cartoons:

Who the hell cares?

You draw who you want to draw. You style it how you wanna style it, and if someone gives you crap for it, tell them to go pick up a pen and do it themselves.

I digress; I wanted to make a cute, loveable, introverted bunny character. If you ever notice something about introverts, they love to wear jackets. When I was a kid, I had man titties that would make Hitomi Tanka jealous. I always wore this grey jacket to cover up my moobs because the bullies used to scoop my boobs. Thankfully, Solomon doesn't have any boobies for the bullies to scoop.

His design was based on Max from Sam & Max. I absolutely love this design. It is very simple and having the bunny have such a big vicious grin gave a nice contrast to his fluffy exterior.

He was also loosely inspired by the way Yin Yang Yo did rabbits. The ears hover off the frame which I thought were cool. I don't like this show, but you sometimes get inspiration from crap you don't care too much about.

He does have these eyes that seem to stare into nothing—beady weird eyes with a goofy pensive look on his face. I like how he came out, he's straightforward to draw, which makes him VERY easy to animate, and he looks good on a t-shirt; what more could I have asked for?

Until next time.

Happy new years eve to some of you around the globe. I've been radio silent for awhile in this rather strange and crazy world. Nonetheless, we must do what we need to do, and it was necessary to post some things I'm working on with my friends to the few that may care to see them.

"Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?"

(Book nerds would get that reference...)

My friend Arzonaut and the man who goes by Thomas Lincoln have been hard at work creating original animated shows for the web to see as we feel growth in the western animation sphere is imperative as it seems there is an overall magic missing from it. You don't even need to ponder this question to determine what it is. We made it our mission to focus on new projects that attempt to take us back to simpler times with wilder and crazier ideas with a focus on forgotten demographics and humor at its forefront.

So, it all started with a rabbit. Solomon, he was christened with. He is a little bunny that finds himself amid a new world, obsessed with unregulated materialism, unquenchable sexual appetites, and the overindulgence of vanity. He also lives in a world where men struggle with women and women struggle with men.

iu_853328_6952770.webp

He wants to find his place in the world and his buddies Grundy, a snarky woman-obsessed Crocodile, and Shamos, an overworked nurse that loves to let loose, try and get Solomon some action and believe in living life with fancy sports cars, lots of money, drugs, and most importantly, women.

I've curated lots of concept art and work that I'll frequently post on this page. We have finalized many aspects of the primary elements of the cartoon and hope to release it Summer of 2023.

To those that have followed me, Arzonaut, and our crew through the years, thank you, and we appreciate you.

We hope you will enjoy Solomon & Grundy when it launches.
